NEW YORK, FEBRUARY 12, 2016

by CHIOMA NNADI

After the Yeezy extravaganza at Madison Square Garden yesterday, the next hot celebrity ticket of the week—Rihanna’s Fenty x Puma debut—was a relatively subdued and intimate affair. There was no art installation, no cast of thousands, and the only reason the show was held up by 15 minutes was because Rihanna’s pal, supermodel Naomi Campbell, was running late. Not that the Barbadian superstar is known for being timely herself: The long wait for her new album release left fans wondering if Anti would ever come out at all.

When it comes to tapping into her fashion instincts though, it’s clear that Rihanna moves at lightning speed, never second-guessing herself, even when her most daring looks are paprazzi’d from all angles. Those witchy senses seemed to guide her in her debut tonight. Lexi Boling, whose off-duty look has made her something of a street style rabble-rouser in her own right, was the first out on the runway, wearing a hoodie-cum-dress with dramatic proportions and striking thigh-high boxing boots. Other distinctive bad-gal tropes came through in the outerwear, and there were several compelling iterations of the classic bomber—a jacket that has surely usurped the biker in a rebel’s wardrobe—including an off-the-shoulder version worn by Ruth Bell with a pair of spindly sneaker-stiletto boots. “If the Addams Family went to the gym, this is what they would wear,” said Rihanna backstage after the show, sporting a freshly cropped black bob that would make Wednesday Addams green with envy.

Overall, the collection had less to do with athlesiure and more with the kind of subversive streetwear rumblings that have been coursing through fashion lately. “I’m inspired by attitude more than anything,” said Rihanna. “Literally from my album to my collection, everything has been stemming from what makes me feel something, what moves me.” Of course, Rihanna has attitude in spades. She has never been afraid to take a risk on a new designer or styling trick in her wardrobe; in fact, if there’s anyone who could pull off both the women’s and the men’s looks here, it’s Rihanna.

In that sense, the clothes synthesized the trends driving a disruptive streak on the runways—not new, per se, but right now. And you could argue that sneaker culture has upended the very notion of an It shoe, given the prices that certain styles fetch on the resale market. Rihanna’s fans will be most eager to get their hands on the shoes, which ran the gamut from wedged stompers to spacey laceless booties, and kicks will be available as soon as the end of next month for less than the price of her sellout creepers. If the heels that Rihanna wore to take her bow are any indication, though, the odds on a stiletto revival just got a little bit higher.

NEW YORK, FEBRUARY 13, 2016

by NICOLE PHELPS

A giant bowl of popcorn sat propped on a coffee table otherwise stacked with photography books. Models lounged on couches in front of floor-to-ceiling “windows” showcasing stunning views of New York City monuments and skyline. An Irish Setter trotted here and there, eager to make friends. Stepping into the Polo showroom on Madison Avenue, buyers and editors with packed schedules joked about pulling up a club chair and staying a while. Ralph Lauren’s world is a seductive one—anybody who’s tried to book a table at the always-packed Polo Bar can tell you that.

Lauren’s Fall men’s and women’s offerings for Polo looked familiar, but in a way, that’s the essence of their appeal. Don a tweedy three-piece suit with a chambray shirt, collegiate tie, and duck boots, or a faded camouflage M-65 style jacket with a cashmere Aran sweater and beaten-up blue jeans and you’re part of his guy’s club. On the women’s side, where fashion moves at a much faster pace, the Polo-isms were to be found in the accessories (a Southwestern belt), details (fringe: yards and yards of it), and the unlikely city-country combination (this season seen in the faded flannel shirt tied around the waist of a silver Lurex thread slip dress).

Within each collection there were novelties: A three-piece men’s suit in washed black denim looked cool, and the sized-down women’s version of Polo’s classic camel coat made a strong combination paired with a thin black turtleneck and a pinstriped pencil skirt. Lauren has incorporated timely touches of athleisure into the lines beyond the performance wear of Polo Sport. But change isn’t this aspirational brand’s selling point: It’s about timelessness and recognizability, especially on the men’s side. Polo is a ticket to the good life—for its customers and certainly for Mr. Lauren himself.

These days, in the age of Instagram, J.Crew is less about whipping up mass populism and more about curating one’s style, taking traditional comfort items and tweaking them so they’re imbued with a sense of character, of personality, of individuality. How serendipitous it was, then, that men’s designer Frank Muytjens recently discovered a trove of vintage horse blankets, their faded pastoral colors exuding the unassuming rustic quality for which he’d been looking. Enhanced texture with a subtle slouch—he knew he had found his mood for Fall.

“There’s an opulence to them,” said Muytjens, pointing to muted stripes and plaids at the small men’s presentation today (shown alongside women’s). “But at the same time, they’re peaceful and nonchalant,” he added. “That’s what I wanted to convey.” Cord pants were double pleated, for a certain off-ness; a lamb’s wool cardigan came loosely belted; a camel coat had been cropped slightly; and pajama piping appeared throughout, mixed in with shearling and denim. An argyle sweater made the cut, because you just can’t find them anymore, said Muytjens. But his favorite piece of the bunch was an extra-long, raglan-sleeved herringbone topcoat, worn with a malleable “crusher” hat in tweed, and, he said, “a frickin’ awesome” patchwork silk tuxedo scarf, which he also happened to be wearing, tied just so. If Muytjens is going to talk style curation, he’s going to walk it, too.

TOP MODEL SECRETS

ARTHUR KULKOV

He ranks as one of sexiest, highest-grossing, most iconic male models in the industry and dreams of designing shoes. Meet Siberian hunk Arthur Kulkov.

PHOTO: JESSE LAITINEN/MINK MGMT

From the tundra in Siberia to the runways in New York, Paris and Milan. Arthur Kulkov was scouted in 2008 and, in contrast to most models who have to struggle for at least a couple of weeks before launching successful careers, he reached instant fame in the industry. During his first season – fall 2008 – he booked several big campaigns before he had walked a single show. He went on from there to getting several features in prominent international magazines like GQ and Details.

Eight years after his breakout season, Arthur Kulkov’s success has stabilized at a high level. Now, MODELS.com ranks him as one of the industry’s sexiest, best-paid and most iconic male models – and his versatility keeps him in the male modeling top layer.

While shooting for H&M in Stockholm, we asked the Russian hunk to fill out our Top Model Secrets questionnaire. Keep scrolling or swiping to get to know him better.

Nicola Formichetti Spring/Summer 2016 Campaign

Nicola Formichetti 02Nicola Formichetti 03Nicola Formichetti

Nicola Formichetti is known for his creative approach to branding – this, after all, is the man thatrecently announced an advertising collaboration between Diesel (for which he is creative director) and Pornhub. But, for the label that he describes as his “baby”, Nicopanda, Formichetti has instead opted to spotlight some of his favourite creatives in a SS16 campaign lensed by Christopher Makos.

The American photographer has an impressive portfolio and has previously worked with Man Ray andAndy Warhol, so Formichetti was keen to draw from his experience and merge it with young talent. The resulting images embody the “hard and soft side of Nicopanda” as the designer puts it, “it’s an amalgamation of subcultures which collide into one universe.” This theme of juxtaposition is the connecting thread between the collection and each image, all of which fuse punk imagery with softer, romantic elements.

As for the casting, Formichetti has always been open about the importance of diversity, often tapping his own friends and muses as opposed to models. This season, stars include artists Phillipa Horan and Sydney Weisman, model-slash-skater-kid Anthony DeFalco and ET Chong, a friend of his assistant’s – all part of the Nicopanda gang. As for the poppers and pills, he’s keen to underscore that they aren’t drugs – they’re candy, designed to release a Nicopanda high. It’s hard to imagine a series of images more emblematic of the designer’s own ethos. As he explains, “Fashion is for everyone. It’s genderless, ageless and for people who are free-spirited and want to have fun!”

The professional model has gone full-frontal for a special sex-themed shoot by photographer Jack Pierson, and there’s certainly nothing bashful about the extensive collection of images.

Miles has been dating Mr Quinto for just over two years now, and the Star Trek actor opened up about the pair’s relationship and hopes for the future in Attitude’s December 2015 Issue (you can still download a copy here, or have it ordered directly to you door here).

“Marriage is certainly something we talk about”, Zachary told to Attitude Magazine. “I’m thrilled now that we can, if and when we decide we want to, but I don’t think it’s something both of us a re necessarily hurtling towards.”

“I’ve never been happier. I’ve never felt so integrated and in place with anyone else. That’s what matters to me and that’s what matters to Miles”.

On the basis of this latest shoot, we’d certainly be putting a ring on that, Zach…
